Improve your game this summer but don't forget your teeth!

July 25, 2019

Summer is the time many student athletes devote the hours and energy to improving their game. Whether they spend time in the gym getting in reps, attending premier camps or traveling across country to showcase invitationals it's important to remember to wear your athletic mouth guard.

A mouth guard will lessen the damage incurred to teeth and reduce the high cost involved to treat broken and fractured teeth. In extreme situations teeth can get knocked out of the mouth if not protected. When matching up with or guarding a taller player it can increase the chances of getting a blow to the mouth. Furthermore, teeth injuries and a dental emergency can add additional stress when occurred out of town and away from home.

Many student athletes wear their guard during games only. It is equally important to keep the athletic mouthguard in during practice as well. A ball inadvertently thrown also has the potential to damage the teeth if no protective appliance is worn.

For athletes still growing it is important to check the fit and coverage of the athletic mouthguard. When several baby teeth have been exfoliated or lost naturally examine the fit of the guard. Make sure it does not impinge or feel tight on any of the teeth or gum tissue. Also check if the chewing surface is excessively worn. Lastly make sure it adequately covers the teeth and part of the gingiva area and that it doesn't feel loose.

Many of the affordable over the counter or drugstore guards can do the job of protecting the teeth. Customized athletic guards are a premier choice and can offer great protection but are more expensive than store bought products. Given the investment of AAU expense, travel costs, and camps many parents and athletes choose to use a store bought product. We feel either option is fine as long as it is a durable material and well fitted to your mouth and dentition. Talk to your dentist to see what is the best option for you.
